Plan the Beginning
Your opening should place the reader inside a specific moment and create a reason to keep reading.
- Begin with one clear moment, image, action, or thought.
- Introduce enough context for the reader to understand what is happening.
- Avoid explaining your entire life story in the opening.
- Create curiosity without becoming confusing.
- Make sure the opening connects to the story that follows.

Build the Middle
The middle of your essay should show what happened, how you responded, and what changed because of the experience.

Your conclusion should show what you learned, who you are becoming, and how this experience connects to your future.
- Reflect on what the experience taught you.
- Show how your thinking, behavior, or goals changed.

- Avoid repeating the introduction word for word.
- End with a clear sense of direction.
