Eligibility

  • Be a legal United States resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Texas.
  • Be at least 16 years old when entering.
  • Have at least one year or 18 semester hours remaining before completing an undergraduate degree.
  • If not yet enrolled in college, begin the freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2027–2028 academic year.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or remain in good academic standing when the school does not provide a GPA.

Requirements

  • Complete a separate online application for the applicable quarterly contest.
  • Submit either a written essay of no more than 500 words or a video essay of no more than three minutes.
  • Write or speak about someone personally known to the applicant who lives in the applicant's community and has provided extraordinary inspiration.
  • Submit original work created without generative artificial intelligence.
  • Follow all written-essay, video-format, and submission requirements in the official rules.
