Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivor Tuition Grant

The Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivor Tuition Grant provides a tuition waiver to eligible surviving spouses and children of Michigan police officers and firefighters who were killed in the line of duty. The program may be used at participating Michigan public universities and community colleges.

Eligibility

  • Be the surviving spouse or natural or adopted child of a Michigan police officer or firefighter who was killed in the line of duty.
  • A child must have been younger than age 21 at the time of the police officer's or firefighter's death.
  • A child must apply for the Survivor Tuition Grant for the first time before age 26.
  • Be an undergraduate student.
  • Not have already earned a bachelor's degree.
  • Enroll at least half-time at a participating Michigan institution.
  • Enroll in a program of study leading to a certificate or degree.
  • Be a Michigan resident for at least 12 months before applying.
  • Meet the institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.
  • Complete the current-year FAFSA.

Requirements

  • Complete the Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivor Tuition Grant application.
  • File the current-year FAFSA.
  • Provide a birth certificate if applying as the child of the deceased police officer or firefighter.
  • Provide a marriage certificate if applying as the surviving spouse.
  • Provide the police officer's or firefighter's death certificate.
  • Provide any additional documentation requested to verify that the death occurred in the line of duty.

How to Apply

  1. 1Complete the current-year FAFSA.
  2. 2Obtain the Survivor Tuition Grant application from MI Student Aid.
  3. 3Complete the application using the deceased police officer's or firefighter's service information.
  4. 4If applying as a child, submit a birth certificate listing the deceased police officer or firefighter as a parent.
  5. 5If applying as a surviving spouse, submit a marriage certificate.
  6. 6Submit the deceased police officer's or firefighter's death certificate.
  7. 7Provide any additional eligibility documentation requested by MI Student Aid.
  8. 8After approval, work with the participating Michigan public institution to have the tuition waiver applied.
  9. 9Continue meeting enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements for continued eligibility.
