Eligibility

  • Be a graduating high school senior and a member of a Valley County 4-H Club.
  • Have been enrolled in 4-H since at least eighth grade.
  • Successfully complete four continuous years of 4-H work and remain enrolled in 4-H at the time of application.
  • Meet the scholarship's Gold Seal requirements, including the required senior-year Gold Seal.
  • Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.0.
  • Plan to enter an accredited college, university, or vocational school as a freshman.
  • The selected school does not have to be located in Montana.
  • The applicant's college major does not have to relate to their 4-H projects.

Requirements

  • Complete the scholarship application by hand.
  • Submit a current high school transcript.
  • Submit one letter of recommendation from a 4-H club leader verifying meeting attendance and club participation.
  • Prepare the required handwritten statement describing the impact 4-H has had on your life and how those experiences will help you achieve your future goals.
  • Describe your college plans, intended area of study, and why you selected that field.
  • Submit a completed 4-H record book for review by the Nelson-Swanson Scholarship Committee.
  • Meet all applicable Gold Seal requirements.

How to Apply

  1. 1Complete the Nelson-Swanson scholarship application by hand.
  2. 2Prepare the required handwritten personal statement.
  3. 3Obtain a recommendation from a 4-H club leader.
  4. 4Attach your current high school transcript.
  5. 5Submit the handwritten application, recommendation, and transcript to the Extension Office by May 1.
  6. 6Complete and submit your 4-H record book by August 14.
  7. 7The Nelson-Swanson Scholarship Committee reviews record books and scholarship eligibility.
  8. 8If selected, scholarship funds are sent directly to the financial-aid office of your chosen school for use during the spring semester of your freshman year.
