LAW – Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers & Firefighters Scholarship

Eligibility

• Enroll full-time at the undergraduate level at a Mississippi state-supported public college or university.
• Be certified as an eligible dependent child or spouse of a Mississippi law enforcement officer, full-time firefighter, or volunteer firefighter who suffered fatal injuries or wounds in the performance of official duties or became permanently and totally disabled as a result of such injuries or wounds.
• Dependent children may be natural children, adopted children, or stepchildren.
• A dependent child must not have reached age 23 on the first day of the first term for which the LAW Scholarship is awarded.
• An eligible spouse must have been legally married to the qualifying officer or firefighter at the time of death or meet the applicable requirements for the spouse of a permanently and totally disabled officer or firefighter.
• Meet all additional certification and documentation requirements established by the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid.

Requirements

• Complete the Mississippi Aid Application through MAAPP for each academic year aid is requested.
• Provide documentation establishing the applicant's relationship to the qualifying law enforcement officer or firefighter.
• Provide documentation establishing the qualifying officer's or firefighter's line-of-duty death or permanent and total disability.
• Provide additional dependency documentation when required for adopted children or stepchildren.
• Enroll and remain enrolled full-time at an eligible Mississippi public institution.
• Submit all supporting documents requested by the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid.

How to Apply

1. 1Complete the Mississippi Aid Application through MAAPP while the application is open.
2. 2Submit documentation verifying your relationship to the qualifying Mississippi law enforcement officer or firefighter.
3. 3Submit documentation verifying the qualifying line-of-duty death or permanent and total disability.
4. 4Provide any additional dependency or eligibility documentation requested by the state.
5. 5Enroll full-time at an eligible Mississippi state-supported college or university.
6. 6Monitor the MAAPP Dashboard for missing documents, eligibility updates, and award information.
7. 7Complete a new application each academic year for continued eligibility.
