MI GEAR UP Scholarship

The MI GEAR UP Scholarship provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible low-income students who successfully participated in Michigan's Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs initiative. Students must be nominated through MI GEAR UP and meet state and federal eligibility requirements before receiving an award.

Eligibility

  • Successfully complete the MI GEAR UP program.
  • Be nominated to receive an MI GEAR UP Scholarship.
  • File the current-year FAFSA.
  • Possess a high school diploma or recognized equivalent certificate.
  • Begin enrollment at a participating institution before age 22.
  • Enroll at least half-time at a participating institution.
  • Meet the institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.
  • Have been a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year.
  • If considered a dependent student, have FAFSA contributors who are also Michigan residents.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or approved refugee.
  • Not be in default on a federal student loan.

Requirements

  • Successfully participate in and complete the MI GEAR UP program.
  • Be selected and nominated for scholarship consideration.
  • Submit the current-year FAFSA.
  • Enroll at least half-time at an eligible participating Michigan institution.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Continue meeting Michigan residency requirements.

How to Apply

  1. 1Participate in and successfully complete the MI GEAR UP program.
  2. 2Be nominated by the MI GEAR UP program for scholarship consideration.
  3. 3Complete and submit the current-year FAFSA.
  4. 4List the Michigan college the student plans to attend on the FAFSA.
  5. 5Monitor the MiSSG Student Portal and MI Student Aid communications for award information.
  6. 6Notify MI Student Aid through MiSSG if the student's Michigan college choice changes.
  7. 7Continue filing the FAFSA annually and meeting renewal requirements while scholarship eligibility remains available.
