The Martin Duffy Adult Learner Scholarship provides tuition assistance to qualifying Minnesota AFL-CIO union members who are continuing their education at an accredited university, college, or vocational school. No academic performance standard is required, and recipients are selected by lot.

Eligibility

  • Be a member in good standing of a Minnesota AFL-CIO local union, OR meet the program's qualifying layoff, retirement, or disability membership provisions.
  • Qualifying laid-off members must have a valid withdrawal card, recall rights, and have been in good standing for six months before layoff.
  • Qualifying retired or disabled members must have been in good standing at the time of retirement or disability.
  • Plan to use the scholarship at an accredited university, college, or vocational school.

  • Complete the application.
  • Obtain local union signature and certification.
  • Describe the intended postsecondary institution and educational goals.

How to Apply

  1. 1Obtain the Martin Duffy application through the Minnesota AFL-CIO or local union.
  2. 2Complete the applicant portion.
  3. 3Identify the intended educational institution and educational goals.
  4. 4Have the local union certify qualifying membership status.
  5. 5Submit the completed application by June 17.
  6. 6Two winners are selected by lot.
  7. 7Recipients must use the scholarship within one year of notification.
