The Indiana Tuition and Fee Exemption for Children of Disabled Veterans or Purple Heart Recipients provides substantial education assistance to eligible biological or adopted children of qualifying veterans. The benefit can cover tuition and regularly assessed fees for up to 124 semester credit hours at Indiana public colleges and universities. Certain recent Indiana high school graduates attending eligible private nonprofit institutions may receive up to $5,000 per academic year.

Eligibility

  • Be the biological or legally adopted child of a qualifying disabled veteran, deceased disabled veteran, Purple Heart recipient, or other veteran meeting the program's statutory requirements.
  • Stepchildren are not eligible for this benefit.
  • Provide documentation establishing the relationship to the qualifying veteran.
  • Meet the applicable Indiana residency or military-service connection requirements.
  • Be eligible for the resident tuition rate when attending an Indiana public college or university.
  • Pursue an eligible undergraduate, graduate, professional, degree, or certificate program.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress at the attending institution.
  • Meet federal and Indiana state financial-aid eligibility requirements.
  • Private nonprofit college eligibility is generally limited to students who graduated from high school on or after January 1, 2023.

Requirements

  • Complete the one-time tuition and fee exemption application through ScholarTrack.
  • Complete an error-free FAFSA for each academic year the benefit will be used.
  • Provide a birth certificate or adoption decree documenting the relationship to the veteran.
  • Provide the veteran's military discharge or service documentation.
  • Provide documentation of the veteran's qualifying service, disability rating, Purple Heart award, or other applicable status.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
  • Use the available credit hours within the program's permitted eight-academic-year period.
