The Indiana Tuition and Fee Exemption for Children and Spouses of Public Safety Officers provides substantial educational assistance to eligible children and spouses of qualifying Indiana public safety officers who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty. The program can cover up to 100% of undergraduate resident tuition and regularly assessed fees for as many as 124 semester credit hours at eligible Indiana public colleges and universities.

Eligibility

  • Be the child or spouse of a qualifying Indiana public safety officer who was killed in the line of duty or suffered a qualifying catastrophic injury or permanent and total disability in the line of duty.
  • Qualifying public safety officers may include paid or volunteer firefighters, law enforcement officers, police reserve officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians, qualifying Department of Correction employees, and community corrections officers.
  • If adopted by the qualifying public safety officer, the applicant must have been adopted before age 18.
  • Applicants qualifying through a parent must be no older than 32 when first applying and becoming eligible.
  • Enroll after high school graduation at an eligible Indiana public college or university.
  • Pursue an approved course of study.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the institution.
  • Complete the FAFSA annually to maintain eligibility.
  • Meet all documentation and program requirements established by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

Requirements

  • Complete the Tuition and Fee Exemption application through ScholarTrack.
  • Complete the FAFSA for each academic year the benefit will be used.
  • Provide documentation establishing the applicant's relationship to the qualifying public safety officer.
  • Provide official documentation of the public safety officer's employment and qualifying death, injury, or disability.
  • Provide adoption records when eligibility is based on adoption.
  • Enroll at an eligible Indiana public institution.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress.
