Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Eligibility

• Be a United States citizen, a United States national from American Samoa, or expect to obtain citizenship by the date of the award.
• Be enrolled at an accredited institution based in the United States.
• Be in the penultimate year of undergraduate study when completing a four-year or longer degree, or the final year when completing the degree in three years or fewer.
• Receive an official nomination from the applicant's current institution or an eligible former institution for certain transfer and community-college applicants.
• Plan to pursue graduate or professional education leading toward a career in public service.

Requirements

• Contact the Truman Faculty Representative at the applicant's institution.
• Complete the campus nomination process and receive institutional nomination.
• Complete the official Truman application.
• Prepare the required public-policy proposal.
• Submit three letters of recommendation.
• Provide transcripts from every college or university attended.
• Participate in a regional finalist interview if selected.

How to Apply

1. 1Locate and contact the Truman Faculty Representative at your institution as early as possible.
2. 2Complete any internal campus application, interview, or nomination requirements.
3. 3If nominated, obtain access to the Foundation's online application system.
4. 4Complete the application, policy proposal, and required written responses.
5. 5Secure three recommendation letters and provide all college transcripts to the Faculty Representative.
6. 6Coordinate with the Faculty Representative so the complete nomination package reaches the Foundation by February 2, 2027.
7. 7If named a finalist, attend the assigned regional review-panel interview.
