Georgia HERO Scholarship Program

The Georgia HERO Scholarship Program provides educational assistance to eligible members of the Georgia National Guard and United States Military Reserves who served in designated combat zones, as well as certain qualifying spouses and children of those service members.

Eligibility

  • Meet United States citizenship or eligible noncitizen requirements.
  • Meet the institution's Georgia residency requirement for the 12 consecutive months immediately before the term begins.
  • Attend an eligible University System of Georgia, Technical College System of Georgia, or qualifying private nonprofit institution in Georgia.
  • Meet applicable Selective Service and Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education requirements.
  • Qualify under one of the program's four military-service categories.
  • Eligible service members must have served in a designated combat zone for at least 181 cumulative days beginning on or after February 1, 2003, or have been evacuated earlier because of severe injuries.
  • Eligible children must meet the program's birth-date and age requirements connected to the qualifying term of service.
  • Eligible spouses must be the spouse of a qualifying service member who died, was killed, or became totally disabled because of combat-zone injuries.

Requirements

  • Complete the Georgia HERO Scholarship application.
  • Provide documentation verifying military service and combat-zone deployment.
  • Provide documentation establishing the applicant's relationship to the qualifying service member when applying as a spouse or child.
  • Submit any residency, citizenship, enrollment, disability, injury, or death documentation requested by GSFC.
  • Complete a renewal application each academic year.

How to Apply

  3. 3Gather birth, marriage, disability, injury, or death documentation when applicable.
  4. 4Complete the Georgia HERO application through the approved GSFC process.
  5. 5Submit the initial application no later than two years after gaining eligibility.
  6. 6Complete a renewal application for each academic year of continued funding.
