Fallen Transportation Workers Scholarship Program

The Fallen Transportation Workers Scholarship Program provides Maryland tuition assistance to eligible children, stepchildren, and surviving spouses of transportation workers who died as a result of an accident while performing qualifying work on a transportation facility or transportation facilities project in Maryland.

Eligibility

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Be the child, stepchild, or surviving spouse of a fallen transportation worker.
  • A surviving spouse must not have remarried.
  • The qualifying transportation worker must have worked in the construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, or operation of a transportation facility or transportation facilities project in Maryland.
  • The qualifying transportation worker must have died on or after January 1, 2022 as a result of an accident that occurred while performing a job duty necessary for the construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or operation of a transportation facility or transportation facilities project in Maryland.
  • Be accepted for admission or enrolled in an eligible undergraduate, graduate, or professional postsecondary program.
  • Undergraduate students may enroll full-time or part-time.
  • Graduate students may enroll full-time or part-time.
  • Students enrolled in an eligible two-year terminal certificate program whose coursework is transferable toward an accredited bachelor's degree may qualify.
  • Students attending an eligible private career school may also qualify.

Requirements

  • Contact the financial aid office at the institution you attend or plan to attend for application instructions.
  • Complete the institution's Fallen Transportation Workers Scholarship application process by July 15.
  • Provide documentation establishing your relationship to the fallen transportation worker.
  • Provide documentation establishing the qualifying worker's death and employment circumstances.
  • Submit all required documentation directly to the institution.
  • Continue meeting applicable enrollment and program eligibility requirements for renewal.

How to Apply

  1. 1Contact your institution's financial aid office for the current Fallen Transportation Workers Scholarship application.
  2. 2Confirm that the deceased worker meets the program's definition of a fallen transportation worker.
  3. 3Gather documentation showing your relationship to the qualifying worker.
  4. 4Gather documentation establishing the worker's qualifying employment and death.
  5. 5Complete the institution's application process by July 15.
  6. 6Submit all supporting documents directly to the institution rather than to MHEC.
  7. 7Contact your institution's financial aid office regarding award amounts and renewal status.
