Community College Guarantee

The Community College Guarantee is a pathway of the Michigan Achievement Scholarship that allows eligible recent Michigan high school graduates to attend their local community college or Tribal college tuition-free while pursuing an eligible skill certificate or associate degree. Eligibility is available regardless of family income, and students receiving a federal Pell Grant may qualify for an additional $1,000 bonus for other college expenses.

Eligibility

  • Graduate from a Michigan high school with a diploma or certificate of completion, or earn a high school equivalency certificate, in 2023 or later.
  • Complete the FAFSA for the applicable academic year.
  • Be a Michigan resident as required by the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.
  • Enroll full-time at an eligible Michigan community college or Tribal college.
  • Enroll as an undergraduate student.
  • Begin college within 15 months of high school graduation or earning a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Meet the participating institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
  • Not be in default on a federal student loan.
  • Students do not need to meet a Student Aid Index or family income requirement for the Community College Guarantee pathway.

Requirements

  • Complete the FAFSA for each academic year.
  • Enroll full-time at an eligible Michigan community college or Tribal college.
  • Begin enrollment within 15 months of high school graduation or earning a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Continue meeting the institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
  • Continue residing in Michigan for renewal eligibility.

How to Apply

  1. 1Create or access a StudentAid.gov account.
  2. 2Complete and submit the FAFSA for the applicable academic year.
  3. 3List the Michigan community college or Tribal college the student plans to attend on the FAFSA.
  4. 4Monitor the MiSSG Student Portal and communications from MI Student Aid for eligibility information.
  5. 5Complete admission and enrollment requirements with the selected college.
  6. 6Enroll full-time within 15 months of high school graduation or earning a high school equivalency certificate.
  7. 7Work with the college's financial aid office to confirm in-district or out-of-district residency status and the amount of Community College Guarantee assistance.
  8. 8Complete the FAFSA annually and continue meeting program requirements for renewal.
