Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship

The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship is an early-identification scholarship for Massachusetts high school sophomores and juniors who have overcome significant adversity, demonstrate high financial need, and show strong academic promise. Selected students may receive substantial financial assistance after high school graduation to attend an eligible postsecondary institution.

Eligibility

  • Be enrolled in the 10th or 11th grade at a public or private secondary school in Massachusetts.
  • Physically reside in Massachusetts with an intent to remain in Massachusetts consistent with Board of Higher Education policy.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent legal resident, eligible non-citizen under Title IV regulations, or have approved Massachusetts High School Completer eligibility under the state's tuition equity law.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrate difficult personal circumstances or significant obstacles that have affected educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrate high financial need.
  • Show strong academic promise and the ability to continue education beyond high school.
  • Be nominated by a school or qualified community agency or organization.

Requirements

  • Receive a nomination from an eligible school or qualified community agency or organization.
  • Complete the Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship online application after receiving nomination access.
  • Submit the required autobiographical essay describing future goals and aspirations.
  • Provide required financial and household information.
  • Upload all required supporting documentation by the application deadline.
  • If selected, graduate from a Massachusetts public or private secondary school.
  • Enroll full-time in an eligible undergraduate program after high school graduation.
  • Complete the FAFSA or another Massachusetts-approved state financial aid application annually while receiving the scholarship.
  • Complete applicable financial aid verification requirements.

How to Apply

  3. 3Create your online scholarship account and complete the student application.
