Children of Veterans Tuition Grant

The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant provides undergraduate tuition assistance to eligible natural or adopted children of qualifying Michigan veterans who died, became totally and permanently disabled because of a service-connected illness or injury, or are listed as missing in action as a result of military service.

Eligibility

  • Be the natural or adopted child of a qualifying Michigan veteran.
  • Be older than age 16 and younger than age 26.
  • Be a Michigan resident for at least 12 months before applying.
  • If considered a dependent student, have FAFSA contributors who are also Michigan residents.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or approved refugee.
  • Possess a high school diploma or recognized equivalent.
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student.
  • Enroll at least half-time at a participating Michigan institution.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25.
  • Meet the institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.
  • File the current-year FAFSA.
  • Not be in default on a federal student loan.
  • Not have been convicted of a felony involving assault, physical injury, or death.
  • Have a qualifying veteran parent who meets the program's Michigan residency and military service requirements.

Requirements

  • Complete the Children of Veterans Tuition Grant application through the MiSSG Student Portal.
  • Submit the current-year FAFSA.
  • Provide the applicant's birth certificate listing the qualifying veteran.
  • Provide the veteran's DD Form 214 or other qualifying discharge or separation documentation.
  • Provide a death certificate or casualty report when applicable.
  • Provide documentation of total and permanent disability or death due to service-connected causes when applicable.

How to Apply

  1. 1Complete the current-year FAFSA and list the intended Michigan college.
  2. 2Create or log in to a MiSSG Student Portal account.
  3. 3Complete the Children of Veterans Tuition Grant application.
  4. 4Upload or submit the required birth certificate and military service documentation.
  5. 5Provide disability, death, or casualty documentation when required for the veteran's qualifying status.
  6. 6Submit the application and required documents by June 30, 2027 for the 2026-27 cycle.
  7. 7Notify MI Student Aid through MiSSG or by phone if the college choice changes.
  8. 8Continue filing the FAFSA annually and meet renewal requirements to receive future awards.
