Eligibility

  • Be a United States citizen or national.
  • Be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited U.S. two-year or four-year institution.
  • Receive a Federal Pell Grant when applying or during the term of the study-abroad program or internship.
  • Be applying to or accepted into an eligible credit-bearing study-abroad program or career-oriented international internship.
  • Select a destination that meets the Gilman Program's current travel-advisory requirements.

Requirements

  • Complete the official Gilman online application.
  • Submit the four required short essays.
  • Provide transcripts.
  • Provide details about the proposed study-abroad program or international internship.
  • Select both a study-abroad advisor and a financial-aid advisor to certify the application.

How to Apply

  1. 1Create an account through the Gilman online application system when the Fall 2026 cycle opens.
  2. 2Complete the application and four required short essays.
  3. 3Upload transcripts and enter the proposed program information.
  4. 4Select the appropriate study-abroad and financial-aid certifying advisors.
  5. 5Submit the student application by October 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
  6. 6Confirm that both advisors complete certification by October 8, 2026.
